The Sister Album Arrives

Dear 'Evermore,' I take it all back - Ross Community Center, Muncie, Indiana

Just when we thought Taylor Swift had done it all, she released a second surprise album. The sister album to “folklore”, “evermore”, was dropped less than five months after the last surprise album.

This new album has the same vibe as “folklore” with a very indie, acoustic, lyric, story-heavy base.  The 15 songs of “evermore” reflect feelings of longing, rainy train rides, hope, loss, and growth.

The lead single, “willow”, is a love song dedicated to how proud she is to be with her man. She builds a fantasy to describe what is like when she is with him and what he makes her feel. A track full of optimism and desire with imagery bouncing off the walls sets up the album perfectly as both the single and album opener.

There is a very popular piano ballad titled “champagne problems” which stole the hearts of listeners. Telling the story of a woman rejecting her boyfriend’s proposal, it is built around the little details of their relationship and the aftermath. Combined with beautiful vocals, the intimate and emotional lyrics move every fan, even if they can’t exactly relate to the story.

Swift also gets into some more creative and fun pop songs on this album unlike the previous one. “no body, no crime” is a literal true-crime song featuring the band HAIM. Telling the classic tale of a woman killing her husband because he was cheating. On a very different note, there is the upbeat “long story story” in which Swift reminds herself and others that they always survive and a reminder to keep going. “closure” has an extremely production-heavy intro, which is unlike any other song on the album which had mixed reviews from listeners.

The heartbeat of the album showcases deep emotion from Taylor and she spills her soul across the board in “tolerate it”, “happiness”, “marjorie”, and “evermore (feat. Bon Iver)”. All these are much slower acoustic and piano set tracks that are what fans associate the sound of  “evermore” with.

Overall, this album is a perfect listen in winter when you’re ready to contemplate or reminisce on different types of relationships throughout your life.
