A sharp pivot from Taylor Swift’s “Reputation” album released in 2017, comes “Lover” released two years later. From a cover that was black and white riddled with media, comes a bright pastel and dreamy album cover, which reflects the 18 songs inside.

With this being the very first album that Swift released while owning the masters and rights, we knew it would be a special one.

This record feels like Taylor returning to her roots and her strengths while also putting a new spin on things. She reflects on who she loves, how she loves, and what to do when that love ends. From upbeat, bubbly, energetic love songs to acoustic and intimate stories, “Lover” has it all, including Taylor’s first songs addressing politics.

The record’s title track, “Lover”, has been the first dance song for couples around the world. Encapturing the feeling of being with your love and living life with them while set to an acoustic beautiful melody enraptures the audience.

The album also has many powerful, catchy, pop hits such as “Cruel Summer”, “I Forgot That You Existed”, “The Man”, “I Think He Knows”, “Death By A Thousand Cuts”, “London Boy”, and the singles “ME!” and “You Need To Calm Down”. This long list had the potential to get lost within each other, yet each track has its own personality and different message.

Swift also includes a deeply personal story about her experience with her mom’s cancer. With a feature from the Dixie Chicks, “Soon You’ll Get Better” is a poetic and intimate look into the perspective of Taylor. Lyrics such as “Holy orange bottles, each night I pray to you/desperate people find faith, so now I pray to Jesus too.” are what separate Swift from the rest.
